Join us for a Simple Lenten Meal in the North Conference Room on Friday, February 24, to benefit L’Arche Community of Greater Washington immediately after the 6pm Stations of the Cross. All are welcome for all or any part of this evening of prayer, fellowship and almsgiving.
Simple Lenten Meals
We serve Simple Lenten Meals in the North Conference Room on the Friday evenings of Lent, following the 6pm Stations of the Cross. Join us for the sustenance of food and fellowship! Each Friday we collect donations to benefit a different community-based organization in Washington, DC . On Friday, February 24, the beneficiary will be Mary House, and the speaker will be Bill Murphy, President of Mary House. Consider spending your early Friday evening with St. Matthew's family and friends--come for the 5:30pm Mass, 6pm Stations of the Cross and end with a shared meal and this great opportunity of almsgiving to Mary House.
"Mary House is a community based organization that provides transitional housing services, shelter and support programs to homeless and struggling families, and was founded on the concept that 'smaller is better.' The philosophy at Mary House has always been to help others as we ourselves would want to be helped, while providing a safe haven that allows families to reclaim their dignity. Mary House is run entirely on donations and grants, and we accomplish our service and our mission through the generosity of people like you." www.maryhouse.org
Mary House, which will be celebrating 30 years of serving immigrant and refugee parents and children in Washington, D.C., works with low-income Latin American families and recently expanded services to resettling Eastern European and Iraqi families. With thirteen sites in Northeast Washington D.C. and Takoma Park, Maryland, Mary House can provide up to 50 families with housing. Mary House has expanded its other support services to serve an additional hundred families every month.
Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis)
The Via Crucis is a journey made in the Holy Spirit, that divine fire that burned in the heart of Jesus (cf Lk 1: 49-50) and brought him to Calvary. The Stations of the Cross, in the form adopted by Pope John Paul II, will be prayed in English on Fridays at 6pm and in Spanish on Sundays at 2:15pm throughout Lent and on Good Friday, April 6. Please join us for this beautiful devotion, which is particularly fitting for Lent.
