Mary, Mother of the Church | |

Pope Francis in 2018 added a universal feast to the liturgical calendar for Mary, Mother of the Church on the Monday after Pentecost - this year, May 20. The decree notes "how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety."

Memorial Day Holiday
Masses are celebrated at 7:30am and 12:10pm, with no Confessions or Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Monday, May 27, Memorial Day. The Cathedral opens at 7am and closes after the 12:10pm Mass, and the rectory office is closed.
Outdoor Masses will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27 at 10am at Gate of Heaven Cemetery (3801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD) and at Mt. Olivet Cemetery (1300 Bladensburg Rd., NE., Washington, DC).

People on the Move
Opening for Communications Director
Changes in our pastoral and administrative staff are coming in late June! Fr. John Benson, Parochial Vicar, who helped to lead us all, body and soul, through the pandemic and beyond, will move to a new assignment within the Archdiocese of Washington. Save the date for Fr. John's farewell celebration on June 23 after the 1pm Mass - his last Sunday Mass as Parochial Vicar. Maureen Hurley, who has led our parish communications and otherwise served as Assistant to the Rector for many years, also leaves the staff to enjoy her family full-time. Let's pray for them as they make their transitions.

Ordination and First Mass
Deacon Isaac Sagastume will be ordained a priest by Cardinal Gregory, along with 15 other deacons of the Archdiocese of Washington, on Saturday, June 15 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. On Sunday, June 16, all are welcome as Fr. Isaac celebrates his First Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Matthew's - a bilingual Mass at 11am followed by a reception. Let's pray in thanksgiving for Deacon Isaac and his intentions as he prepares for ordination.

¡Los cambios en nuestro personal pastoral y administrativo llegarán a finales de junio! El P. John Benson, nuestro Vicario Parroquial, quien ayudó a guiarnos a todos, en cuerpo y alma, a través de la pandemia y más allá, pasará a una nueva asignación dentro de la Arquidiócesis de Washington. Reserve la fecha para la celebración de despedida del P. John el 23 de junio después de la Misa de la 1pm, su última Misa dominical como Vicario Parroquial. Maureen Hurley, quien ha dirigido las comunicaciones de nuestra parroquia y ha servido como Asistente del Rector durante muchos años, también deja el personal para disfrutar de su familia a tiempo completo. Ordenación y Primera Misa

Guest Choir
We welcome the Chamber Singers of Marywood University at the 5:30pm Vigil on Saturday, May 25. In addition to singing throughout the liturgy, they will have a short concert before Mass as well as a choral postlude.
May Recital by French Organist
St. Matthew's welcomes David Hirst, Organist of Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, Mantes-la-Jolie (Paris), France for a 40-minute recital on Wednesday, May 29. Join us in the cool of the Cathedral at 12:40pm for his performance of Symphony No. 5 in F minor for organ, Op. 42 No. 1 by Charles-Marie Widor.

National Eucharistic Revival
This year, the U.S. bishops are sponsoring a National Eucharistic Revival. The aim is to kindle love for the Risen Jesus in the Eucharist and revitalize the Catholic people’s participation in Sunday Mass. To this end, we present brief weekly meditations on the Eucharist until the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, June 2, 2024.

Ilia Delio, Making All Things New: Catholicity, Cosmology, Consciousness, 3
Theologian John Dourley speaks of recovering a wider sense of the holy by which humanity births a new myth of the co-redemption of the divine and human in one single and historically prolonged process. Divinity and humanity have, from the birth of consciousness, been opposites united in an ongoing process of mutual redemption. Both divinity and humanity are related to each other from the outset and attain the completion of their respective consciousness in the reciprocity of their relationship. For both, a new moral imperative is implicit in this dialectic. Morality is no longer an arbitrary imposition by a God foreign to the fabric of humanity. For both, the basis of morality lies in the human task of making God real and conscious in historical processes through ushering into human consciousness that divinity which appears to become more fully real and responsible to it. Because divine and human are always opposites in tension, the Spirit reconciles the coincidence of opposites constitutive of divine and human life.
The symbolic relation of the Father to the Son corresponds to the relation of unconscious to consciousness. The incarnation is the consciousness of God entering into unconscious matter and raising it to consciousness. In the Spirit the opposites of God and world are beyond the threat of dissolution; hence, divine life, intensely alive in the interplay of its polarities, rests always in Spirit-filled resolution beyond disintegration. German mystic Jacob Boehme (d. 1624) said that the opposites in the divine life are not united in eternity, as traditional trinitarian theology would have it. Divinity necessarily creates to unite in finite consciousness the opposites it could neither perceive nor unite in itself. Hence, the life of Jesus is the revelation of God, and we are called into this mystery, through the life of Spirit, to share in the consciousness of Jesus by sharing in his oneness of cosmotheandric love. However, at the same time, it is to realize the transcendent nature of this love.
God’s revelation continues to transcend itself in and through us until the warring absolutes of divinity and humanity are resolved in higher forms of consciousness and compassion. This is the work of the Spirit, by which the opposites of God are beyond the threat of dissolution. The Spirit raises the unconscious christic life to the consciousness of being part of a whole, orienting one’s life to the whole, so that “holiness” is consciousness of belonging to God-Omega. To be entangled with Jesus Christ is to live in the fields of love and compassion, contributing to the mutual completion of God and humanity in the future pleroma. We are drawn to surrender our separate selves and to be part of a greater whole in the evolution of love.
